According to analyst Jeff Pu, Apple is set to upgrade the selfie cameras in its iPhone 17 series, featuring a 24MP sensor across all models, 9to5Mac reports. The launch is expected to occur in September.

Selfie camera upgrade

Currently, the iPhone 16 lineup includes a 12MP front-facing camera, a configuration that has remained unchanged for several generations. While Apple has made minor tweaks to the camera, such as larger apertures, the megapixel count has not increased for years.

With the iPhone 17 models, all will receive a bump to 24MP selfie cameras. This aligns with predictions from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who has indicated that at least one model in the iPhone 17 series will feature this upgrade. Kuo noted that a 24MP camera would “significantly improve the image quality.”

Higher megapixel counts allow photos to maintain quality even when cropped, enhancing flexibility in post-processing. However, factors such as lens aperture, sensor size, and software also play critical roles in image quality.

iPhone 17 specifications and features

Alongside the upgraded front camera, Pu’s report states that the iPhone 17 lineup will increase RAM from 8GB in the iPhone 16 series to 12GB in the iPhone 17 models. This increase is speculated to support future Apple Intelligence features that may require more memory.

Apple will introduce the base iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and a new model, the iPhone 17 Air, which will replace the iPhone 17 Plus. The iPhone 17 Air is expected to feature a slimmer design, potentially testing whether it can offer the same performance as standard models.

Pu confirmed in a research note with investment firm GF Securities that each iPhone 17 model will be equipped with a 24MP front camera, contrasting with the 12MP front camera in all four iPhone 16 models.

Additionally, Pu reiterated other anticipated features of the iPhone 17 series, including a 48MP Telephoto camera for the Pro and Pro Max models, and expectations for the A19 and A19 Pro chips to utilize TSMC’s newer third-generation 3nm process, known as N3P.

All four iPhone 17 models are projected to launch in September.
