Tesla is now offering free supercharging to some Cybertruck buyers as it deals with what appears to be declining interest in Elon Musk’s futuristic vehicle.
The incentive is available to customers who purchase a new Foundation Series Cybertruck. These models start at approximately $95,000. The free supercharging applies “during your ownership of the vehicle,” according to a notice on Tesla’s website.
To be eligible, buyers must have ordered their Foundation Series vehicle on or after February 28. While the offer cannot be transferred, it does apply to all Tesla-branded superchargers. Tesla also notes that it “reserves the right to revoke free supercharging in the event of excessive charging.”
While the exact cost of charging a Cybertruck varies across the US, free lifetime charging would be a significant benefit for any Tesla owner.
This isn’t the first incentive Tesla has introduced to boost Cybertruck demand. In January, the company began offering up to $1,600 off new Cybertrucks and a $2,600 discount on used vehicles. They also slashed leasing prices to $750 a month in recent weeks.
Earlier in the year, Business Insider reported that Tesla had shifted some workers off its Cybertruck production lines at its Austin factory. Sales figures for the vehicle, which faced production delays and launched with a higher-than-expected price tag, have reportedly been “broadly underwhelming”.
Data from Cox Automotive indicates that Tesla sold 38,965 Cybertrucks last year. While this made it the best-selling electric pickup truck in the US, it fell short of analyst expectations from late 2023, which projected 48,500 units shipped in 2024.
Furthermore, demand appeared to decrease toward the end of the year. Tesla delivered 12,991 Cybertrucks in the fourth quarter of 2024, down from 16,692 in the previous quarter.
The free supercharging offer arrives as Tesla navigates multiple challenges. These include collapsing sales in Europe and a substantial backlash against CEO Musk.
