AMD is reportedly preparing to price its upcoming Radeon RX 9000 GPUs aggressively to compete with NVIDIA’s RTX 5000 series, potentially impacting sales of its own RX 7800 XT models. The launch is slated for March.
Pricing strategy and production changes
AMD has not officially disclosed the pricing for its RDNA 4 GPUs but has indicated plans for competitive pricing as the release date approaches. Reports suggest that the RX 9070 series might be priced between $500 and $600, directly targeting NVIDIA’s offerings.
According to a report by IT Home, AMD has decided to discontinue production of the RX 7800 XT much earlier than planned, halting it in January 2025 instead of the originally scheduled third quarter of 2025. This move is intended to keep focus on the new RX 9070 GPUs.
As the pricing landscape shapes up, the RX 9070 XT could be priced around $600, while the RX 9070 may launch for $500, aligning closely with the RX 7800 XT’s launch price of $500. This strategy positions AMD to effectively compete against NVIDIA’s RTX 5070 priced at $549.

Performance expectations
The RX 9070 GPUs are expected to offer improved ray tracing performance compared to their predecessors, which could help AMD recover market share in the mid-range graphics segment. Current leaks suggest that these new GPUs will deliver performance on par with NVIDIA’s offerings, making them appealing alternatives.
The RX 9070 XT is predicted to compete with the RTX 5070 Ti, presenting a price advantage of $150 less, while the RX 9070 is anticipated to outperform the RTX 5070. Both models are rumored to include 16GB of VRAM, enhancing their competitiveness in the market.
Reports indicate that the RX 9070 series will leverage AMD’s new RDNA 4 architecture, which is said to include enhancements in ray tracing capabilities and upscaling technology. AMD is aware that its pricing must be not only reasonable but aggressively competitive to deter NVIDIA’s latest products.
The assertion of a “very sharp” pricing strategy comes from discussions on the Board Channels forums and is echoed by IT Home. The RX 7800 XT currently has a market value around $520, indicating that the RX 9070 may be positioned at or below this price to create better value.
If priced at $500 for the RX 9070 and between $600 and $650 for the RX 9070 XT, AMD would place its GPUs $50 to $100 less than the competing NVIDIA models, compounded by an anticipated performance edge.
AMD’s last-minute pricing adjustments have occurred in the past, so while the information presents a compelling expectation, it’s essential to await the official confirmation and launch of the GPUs. Strong ray tracing and an improved upscaling technology are crucial for AMD to successfully challenge NVIDIA’s dominance in this segment.
