Apple is expected to unveil a new model called the iPhone 17 Air later in 2025, which will represent its thinnest smartphone to date by being approximately 2 millimeters thinner than current models, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.

iPhone 17 Air features and specifications

The iPhone 17 Air will serve as a testing ground for future technologies, including advancements leading towards foldable devices. This framing comes following Apple’s successful branding of thinner devices with the Air moniker, seen previously in the MacBook Air and iPad Air.

Gurman reports that the iPhone 17 Air may feature a thickness between 5.5mm and 6.25mm, closely aligning with the M4 iPad Pro and becoming slimmer than the iPhone 6. The device is anticipated to have a 6.6-inch ProMotion OLED display, which utilizes Apple’s 120Hz variable refresh rate technology, previously exclusive to iPhone Pro models.

In terms of camera capabilities, the iPhone 17 Air is expected to possess a single 48-megapixel camera lens on the back and a 24-megapixel front-facing selfie camera. It will likely be powered by Apple’s A19 chip and include 8GB of RAM to facilitate Apple Intelligence AI features.

The iPhone 17 Air will reportedly include Apple’s first in-house modem, codenamed Sinope, which is set to debut in the new iPhone SE in spring 2025. This year’s iPhone lineup is also expected to feature Apple-designed Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chips, although it is unclear if these will apply to the iPhone 17 Air.

In addition to the iPhone 17 Air, Gurman indicates that Apple plans to launch other products in 2025, including a smart home hub. However, there is no mention of a new version of the mixed reality headset, Vision Pro, in the upcoming launches.

The upcoming iPhone SE and the new iPad Air models are also expected to receive significant updates. The iPad will reportedly upgrade to the A17 Pro chip with 8GB of memory, making it compatible with Apple Intelligence.
