Apple is exploring advanced health features for its upcoming AirPods Pro, including heart rate and temperature monitoring. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman Power On newsletter, these developments are part of Apple’s ongoing effort to enhance its audio products. The features are currently in early testing phases, and while they’re aiming for a quick rollout, a finalized launch timeline remains unconfirmed.

Apple explores health features for next AirPods Pro

Recent reports indicate that Apple’s ventures into health monitoring via the AirPods Pro, tentatively dubbed AirPods Pro 3, are underway. Gurman suggests that while the company has determined that the Apple Watch provides more accurate heart rate measurements, the AirPods are “not terribly far off” in terms of precision. This potential integration would allow broader accessibility to health monitoring capabilities without necessitating the use of an Apple Watch.

In addition to heart rate monitoring, Apple is also testing temperature sensing features for the new AirPods. Such capabilities could position AirPods as a versatile health device catering to users who prioritize an all-in-one solution for fitness tracking. Gurman highlights that the heart rate functionality could see a debut sooner than anticipated, whereas temperature capabilities may take longer to be fully developed and implemented in consumer models.

The introduction of heart rate monitoring aligns with Apple’s strategy to expand its health ecosystem. For example, the Powerbeats Pro 2, set to launch in 2025, will also feature heart rate monitoring during workouts. This functionality will allow users to connect with gym equipment, such as treadmills, enabling seamless integration of workout data into the iPhone’s Health app.

Apple has recently revived discussions surrounding the possibility of embedding cameras into its AirPods. Gurman notes that this initiative has resurfaced as a “priority” for Apple, particularly to bolster its AI services. Although this feature may offer innovative possibilities in the future, the timeline remains uncertain, and it is expected to take several years before implementation.

The AirPods Pro 3’s advancements build on previous iterations, which have already established a user base fascinated by their audio quality and seamless integration with the Apple ecosystem. As Apple continues to innovate, the anticipated health features could significantly shift how users engage with their audio accessories, setting them apart from competitors.
