Instagram is set to introduce a new feature that allows users to transform their videos using a generative AI model, Movie Gen. This update, anticipated for 2025, aims to enhance content creation by enabling users to change backgrounds, outfits, and even their appearances in videos. Adam Mosseri, Instagram’s head, highlights the potential for creativity, stating that users should be able to modify their videos in any imaginable way.

Instagram to launch AI video feature in 2025

The announcement follows similar developments from OpenAI and Google DeepMind, who have also unveiled video generation models. By integrating AI tools within Instagram, Meta intends to showcase the immediate applications of generative technology across its platforms. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has expressed a desire to incorporate AI across Meta’s offerings, tailoring content specifically to individual user interests.

While initial demonstrations of AI-generated content appear impressive, they do come with challenges. OpenAI’s Sora has raised concerns about video quality, including issues like disappearing objects and inconsistent facial appearances in footage. The early tests of Movie Gen AI showed only one-second clips, and the longevity of quality remains to be seen in longer videos.

Concerns about AI integration in social media

Meta’s move to implement AI tools raises questions about the implications for mental health and the social aspects of the platform. Critics argue that social media often exacerbates feelings of insecurity due to unrealistic portrayals of life. By adding the capability to extensively alter video content, Instagram risks further distancing representations from reality.

While the new tools can enhance user creativity, there are concerns that they may detract from authentic human connections. Mosseri emphasizes the value of creativity, noting that users should capture their experiences and stories authentically. However, the deployment of AI-generated content may lead to a landscape dominated by artificially created images and videos, diminishing the essence of shared experiences.

The potential for creative innovation through AI video tools exists, with possibilities for new storytelling formats on the platform. Users may find value in these features as a means of enhancing their posts, provided they align with personal narratives. However, the lack of authentic storytelling remains a significant drawback, as social media fundamentally relies on real connections.

Despite the promising advancements in AI capabilities, the integration into social media apps must consider the risks involved. The proliferation of fake or misleading imagery can mislead users and contribute to distorted realities online. Although generative AI tools may foster fresh creative avenues, the question of whether they serve to strengthen or weaken genuine engagement within the app remains unanswered.

The rollout of Instagram’s AI video content features is currently slated for 2025.
