Google’s Android 16 beta introduces a notable feature for Pixel 9 users, enabling screen-off fingerprint unlocking. This aims to streamline access, enhancing user experience. The update is significant, showcasing how Google continues to evolve its mobile operating system.
Google’s Android 16 beta enhances Pixel 9 with screen-off fingerprint unlock
With ongoing complaints regarding the usability of on-screen fingerprint sensors, Google addresses these issues head-on. Users often find that the screen must be activated before the device recognizes their fingerprints, particularly with older Pixel devices employing optical sensors. The newly added “Screen-off Fingerprint Unlock” improves functionality specifically for the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, and Pixel 9 Pro XL.
The second developer preview of Android 16, released recently, presents this feature as a setting under Settings > Security & privacy > Device unlock > Face & Fingerprint Unlock > Fingerprint Unlock. The feature description states, “use Fingerprint Unlock even when the screen is off.” This integration reflects Google’s commitment to enhancing user experiences with its devices.
Dallas Thomas, an editor at Android Police, tested this functionality on his Pixel 9 Pro, noting its effectiveness in allowing quick access to the device without needing to wake the display. However, he observed that the feature is absent in older models such as the Pixel 7, which uses an optical fingerprint sensor that requires screen illumination for reading fingerprints. The compatibility of the “Screen-off Fingerprint Unlock” setting is exclusive to devices equipped with the newer ultrasonic sensors, as seen in the Pixel 9 series.
Additionally, the update maintains focus on improving user interactivity by suggesting other features that may assist those without the latest hardware. The “Always show time and info,” “Lift to check phone,” and “Tap to check phone” settings keep the screen active, allowing for easy access to the fingerprint scanner when the screen is lifted or tapped.
Beyond this feature, Android 16 DP2 also introduces fresh emoji from Unicode 16.0, alongside various developer enhancements, reflecting the broader scope of updates aimed at improving overall functionality and user engagement. As investigations into the full capabilities of this update continue, users are advised to keep an eye on upcoming developments.
