Apple could introduce its first foldable iPhone as early as September 2026. Contrary to earlier beliefs, industry expert Ross Young suggests it will likely mirror the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold design instead of the Galaxy Z Flip. This speculation arises amid a slowdown in the foldable smartphone market, where growth has stalled significantly.

Apple’s foldable iPhone expected by September 2026

Reports indicate that foldable smartphone sales are expected to grow by only 5% in 2024, with a projected decline of 4% in 2025. This marks a stark contrast to the previous years, which saw consistent annual growth of at least 40% since 2019. Young attributes this change to waning customer interest in foldable designs but believes Apple’s entry into this space could revitalize the market.

Young’s assertion about the design of Apple’s potential foldable device stems from a notable market trend. He observed that sales for the Galaxy Z Fold 6 are projected to exceed those of the Galaxy Z Flip 6, indicating a stronger consumer preference for larger foldable devices. The Galaxy Z Flip, while successful, is forecasted to see a 10% decline in sales compared to its predecessor. Apple’s design choice is also influenced by its aim for a significant impact in the foldable market, leveraging its reputation for premium devices.

The anticipated “iPhone Fold” is expected to feature a display size between 7.9 and 8.3 inches, offering ample room for enhanced functionalities. By adopting this model, Apple may create a versatile device that aligns with evolving user demands for multifunctionality and cutting-edge design. The potential for a higher price point could also benefit Apple’s profitability, as evident in Samsung’s pricing strategy for its foldables—the Galaxy Z Flip 6 starts at $999, and the Galaxy Z Fold 6 begins at $1,799.

Market dynamics indicate a complex landscape as Apple prepares to join the foldable segment. The shift in interest is apparent in the declining sales projections for the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip models, even while the Galaxy Z Fold continues to gain traction. Analysts speculate that user preferences are gravitating away from clamshell designs and toward larger, more versatile devices that could support enhanced productivity.

According to Young, Apple’s influential role in the smartphone market could contribute to a predicted 30% growth in foldable sales once it launches its device in 2026. This anticipated surge follows the recent trend where leading brands have struggled to maintain momentum in foldable sales. With Apple at the forefront of innovation, its market entry could drive renewed interest and increase sales opportunities across the sector.

As customers await the launch of the foldable iPhone, Apple continues to work on other models. The iPhone 17 series is expected in 2025, with the introduction of the “iPhone 17 Air,” touted to be the thinnest iPhone to date. This new model aims to replace the “iPhone Plus” in the lineup and will accompany the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max.

Consumer demand for foldable smartphones remains uncertain as the industry anticipates further developments. Apple’s cautious approach to entering this market contrasts with its usual aggressive product strategies, yet it may signal a careful assessment of current consumer preferences and market viability. Investigations into user responses to existing foldable models could provide insights to influence Apple’s entry in 2026.
