Google Chrome is rolling out an AI feature called “Store reviews,” enabling users to view a summary of reviews from trusted independent sites while browsing, according to leaker
Leopeva64. This feature aims to help users assess the credibility of websites, particularly as online scams surge during the holiday shopping season. Observations by users on social media indicate that a brief AI-generated summary will soon appear in the “page info bubble” next to the website’s URL. The reviews will aggregate data from platforms like Trust Pilot and ScamAdvisor.

The recent increase in online scams, particularly around Black Friday and Cyber Monday, prompted this timely enhancement. According to Adobe, consumers projected to spend a record $241 billion online during the 2024 holidays, reflecting a significant rise of 8.4% from 2023. This surge in online shopping has highlighted the need for effective consumer protection tools. With users potentially exposed to phishing attacks and fraudulent websites, the FBI has issued warnings and guidance for online shoppers. Google aims to mitigate these risks utilizing advanced AI features in their Chrome browser.

Google Chrome launches AI-powered store reviews for safer shopping

In addition to the Store reviews feature, Google has been working on enhanced protections within Chrome. The browser’s proactive protection now incorporates real-time AI capabilities to alert users about dangerous websites, downloads, and extensions. Previously known as proactive protection, this upgrade signals Google’s commitment to bolstering user security in an increasingly risky digital landscape.

This move aligns with emerging trends showing a shift towards online shopping rather than physical retail spaces. The balance between in-person and online shopping continues to tip, emphasizing the need for robust safety measures as mobile spending rises. Adobe projected that mobile revenue would capture a record 53.2% of online shopping this holiday season, translating to approximately $128 billion.

While users await the full rollout of AI-generated store reviews, it’s important to note that this feature remains under development. Soon, clicking on the Store reviews option will reveal a dedicated panel displaying a comprehensive overview of reviews from various sources. This information aims to help users differentiate between authentic e-commerce sites and fraudulent ones without the need for extensive research.
