Apple further unveiled Apple Intelligence at It’s Glowtime event, a suite of AI-driven features designed to enhance users’ interactions with their iPhones, iPads, and Macs. This new system directly integrates large language and diffusion models into the devices, offering a more secure and private AI experience than cloud-based solutions. Here’s a breakdown of what Apple Intelligence is, when it will be available, and which devices will support it.

What is Apple Intelligence?

Apple Intelligence is an AI-driven technology built directly into Apple devices. It offers advanced features to help users write, create, and organize more effectively. It is not a standalone app but an integrated system that powers various tools and functions across Apple’s ecosystem, from communication to creativity.

When will Apple Intelligence be available

Apple Intelligence uses on-device large language and diffusion models, ensuring that data never leaves the user’s device. The on-device semantic index enables the AI to access and integrate information across apps and devices, enhancing productivity without compromising privacy. Apple has also introduced Private Cloud Compute, a feature allowing larger, server-based model computation while ensuring user data remains private and is never stored on Apple’s servers.

Among the standout features is the ability to generate emojis and images using AI. Apple Intelligence also includes Writing Tools for summarizing long texts, rewriting messages in different tones, and simplifying group threads. The Smart Reply feature in Mail allows users to respond to emails with just a tap quickly, and notifications can now be summarized for easy review.

One of Apple Intelligence’s defining elements is its integration across Apple’s devices, including the iPhone. With Apple Intelligence running on-device, users benefit from enhanced privacy as their personal data stays on their iPhones. Even when ChatGPT is involved in processing, the system ensures that all interactions are handled securely on the device, with users in control of when and how their data is used.

When will Apple Intelligence be available?

Apple Intelligence will launch in beta in the United States next month, and wider availability is expected to roll out to more regions later in the year. This will allow users to begin experiencing the AI-enhanced features integrated into their devices. Apple aims for a full release as part of its iOS 18 rollout later this fall.

Which phone will get Apple Intelligence?

Apple Intelligence will be available on a wide range of Apple devices, primarily those with more recent chipsets. The following phones will support Apple Intelligence:

  • iPhone 16 series (iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, iPhone 16 Pro Max) with A18 and A18 Pro chips.
  • The iPhone 15 Pro series (iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max) has A17 Pro chips.

These devices will be able to use Apple Intelligence alongside iPhones:

  • iPad Pro models with M1 chips or later.
  • iPad Air models with M1 chips or later.
  • MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, Mac mini, Mac Studio, and Mac Pro with M1 or later chips.

The decision to run Apple Intelligence on-device rather than rely solely on the cloud emphasizes Apple’s focus on privacy. All AI-driven features, including interactions with Siri and ChatGPT, will remain secure, and user consent will be required before sharing any information.
