The Tesla Model Y 2025, a much-anticipated update to Tesla’s popular electric SUV, has finally been spotted on the road in camouflage. This first glimpse of the facelifted Model Y, codenamed Juniper, follows over a year of speculation and excitement among automotive enthusiasts and industry watchers.
The sighting of Tesla Model Y 2025, captured in a photo posted on Reddit by user u/JacklJack, reveals a camouflaged vehicle undergoing testing in California, marking the beginning of the countdown to its official launch next year.
The Tesla Model Y 2025 comes to light
The Tesla Model Y 2025 update has been a hot topic since overseas reports first suggested over 12 months ago that a major facelift was in the works. Initially, it was rumored that production of the updated Model Y would begin in October 2024.
However, Tesla CEO Elon Musk confirmed last month that the facelifted Model Y would not be released this year, pushing the launch window to next year at the earliest. This aligns with Tesla’s usual timeline for rolling out updates, similar to what was observed with the Model 3 sedan’s refresh.
No Model Y “refresh” is coming out this year.
I should note that Tesla continuously improves its cars, so even a car that is 6 months newer will be a little better.

The Model 3 facelift, introduced nine months ago, provides a possible blueprint for what to expect with the Model Y. The Model 3 was first seen in camouflage about ten months before its official unveiling, with the launch occurring a few months later. If Tesla follows a similar pattern, the Model Y facelift could be officially revealed around April next year, with a launch in various markets, including Australia, by mid-year.
Dissecting the Tesla Model Y 2025 spy photo
While the camouflage obscures many details, the spy photo offers some hints about the changes in the Tesla Model Y 2025. The front fascia appears to have a lower and flatter nose, which aligns with the recent design changes seen in the Model 3. Heavily camouflaged headlights suggest they may be slimmer and more streamlined, reflecting the design cues from the updated Model 3.
The rear of the vehicle is also camouflaged, hinting at potential changes to the tail-lights and bumper. The Model 3 update introduced C-shaped LED tail-lights and refreshed bumpers, which are likely to carry over to the Model Y due to the similarities between the two models. Additionally, new wheel designs are expected, although specific details remain under wraps.
Interior overhaul anticipated
Changes to the interior of the Tesla Model Y 2025 are harder to discern from the spy photo, but insights can be drawn from the Model 3’s recent update. The most notable change in the Model 3 was the removal of steering column stalks, with indicators and gear selectors integrated into the steering wheel and touchscreen respectively. It’s reasonable to expect the Model Y to adopt this innovation, streamlining the driving interface.
The Model 3 also introduced a larger and brighter touchscreen, a revised center console, and a restyled steering wheel. These upgrades, along with new front seats featuring heating and ventilation, and the global removal of faux wood dashboard trim, are likely to be reflected in the Model Y’s interior facelift. Although specific interior changes are not visible in the spy photo, user u/JacklJack, who posted the image, noted that everything inside the vehicle was covered, hinting at significant updates.
Performance and efficiency at its best
While the exterior and interior updates are exciting, the Tesla Model Y 2025 is not expected to see major changes to its battery and electric motors. However, enhancements in aerodynamics and tire technology might improve the vehicle’s efficiency. The updated exterior design could offer better aerodynamic performance, potentially extending the driving range.
Additionally, the prototype was seen with Pirelli Scorpion tires, known for their lower rolling resistance, which could further enhance efficiency compared to the current Hankook tires on Model Ys with 19-inch wheels.
