According to sources, Spotify Clips is the next big move of the popular music streaming service.
The way people consume music continues to evolve. Streaming services like Spotify have become the go-to platform for many music lovers, offering vast libraries and personalized recommendations. But the world is dominated by short-form video so Spotify is testing the waters by integrating these bite-sized clips directly into the app.
This move follows a trend seen across social media platforms. From TikTok to Instagram Reels, short-form video content has exploded in popularity. It allows users to quickly consume engaging visuals and discover new information or entertainment.
Spotify Clips is rolling out app-wide
Previously, Spotify introduced “Clips” in March. This feature allowed artists to create short videos for their artist profiles, album pages, and upcoming release countdown pages. It offered a way for artists to connect with fans and promote their music in a more engaging way.
However, the recent test done, spotted by Music Ally, suggests streaming service is considering expanding Spotify Clips beyond artist profiles. Music Ally discovered clips appearing at the top of Spotify’s “Pop Drive” playlist, featuring artists like Sabrina Carpenter and Benson Boone.
This move aligns with comments made by Spotify CEO Daniel Ek during a recent earnings call. Ek hinted at a broader role for Clips, stating, “You’re going to see music clips in a bigger way”.
While Spotify hasn’t officially confirmed the test or its plans for Spotify Clips, it suggests a growing interest in integrating short-form video into the music streaming experience.
An idea born out of shorter attention span
It would be safe to say that fleeting attention spans and the dominance of short-form video has pushed Spotify to this move.
With platforms like TikTok playing a major role in music trends, Spotify appears to be adapting by offering a similar bite-sized video experience within its app.
Apart from that, Spotify recently expanded its partnership with Universal Music Group, allowing artists to share teasers of upcoming songs. This further reinforces Spotify’s focus on providing tools for artists to promote their music and for fans to discover new sounds.
Whether short video clips become a permanent fixture on Spotify playlists remains to be seen. However, this test surely highlights there will be a change to the music industry really soon as Spotify is the go-to option for unheard artists to be discovered.
