Apple recently released the first betas of iOS 17.5 and iPadOS 17.5 for developers to try out. Though these updates don’t seem like they bring much new stuff at first glance, they contain some neat surprises, especially for EU users:

  • Easier app downloads in the EU: For people in the EU, iOS 17.5 brings a handy feature: the ability to download apps straight from certain developers’ websites called Web Distribution. It’s a change that gives users more options and flexibility when it comes to getting their favorite apps. Want to learn how iOS sideloading works? Visit the related article.
  • Cool podcast widget change: In iOS 17.5, when you listen to podcasts, the widget’s background color now matches the podcast’s cover art. It’s a small touch but adds a bit of fun to your home screen.

  • Better control for businesses: If you’re in charge of managing lots of iPhones or iPads for a business, iOS 17.5 makes your life easier. It lets you lock devices into specific beta versions during setup, streamlining things for IT managers.
  • Checking your iPad’s battery health: While you won’t see it yet, iPadOS 17.5 hints at a new Battery Health menu for iPads. It’ll show you how healthy your iPad’s battery is and how many times it’s been charged. This feature might only show up on new iPads expected to launch soon.

  • New Apple Pencil? The beta code for iOS 17.5 mentions a possible new version of the Apple Pencil, labeled “V4.” Rumor has it, this could launch alongside new iPad Pro and iPad Air models. Could it come with new tricks like a squeeze gesture? We’ll have to wait and see.
  • More privacy for item trackers: Remember Apple’s joint initiative with Google last year? Now, iOS 17.5 expands the “Found Moving With You” alerts to third-party item trackers, keeping your privacy intact.
  • Group FaceTime spam solution: In iOS 17.5 beta, there’s a hint of a new option to block everyone in a group FaceTime call. It’s a handy feature if you’re tired of dealing with spammy calls, though it’s not confirmed yet if it’s working in the beta.

When can you get iOS 17.5 and iPadOS 17.5?

iOS 17.5 and iPadOS 17.5 are expected to drop for everyone in May. As developers and users keep poking around in the betas, we’re sure to find more interesting stuff. So, keep an eye out for more updates soon!

In short, while these updates might not be flashy, they show Apple’s dedication to making your iPhone and iPad experience smoother and more enjoyable. With each beta, we get a peek into what’s next for Apple devices, and it looks promising.
