Meta continues to expand its technological footprint.

Meta is set to unveil AI-infused enhancements to its Ray-Ban smart glasses next month.

This development signals a potent integration of cutting-edge technology with a timeless fashion accessory.

What to expect from the Ray-Ban smart glasses AI enhancements?

Based on reports from The New York Times, who received early access, the AI enhancements will include:

  • Object and animal recognition: Users will be able to ask the glasses to identify various objects and animals using voice commands.
  • Monument identification: The glasses will have the ability to recognize landmarks and monuments, potentially providing historical or architectural information.
  • Real-time translation: The AI will be able to translate text from foreign languages, potentially aiding in travel and communication.

How it works

The AI features will likely leverage the glasses’ existing hardware and some additional components:

  1. Cameras: Visual data is essential for object, monument, and text recognition.
  2. Microphone: Voice commands will be the primary way of interacting with the AI.
  3. Processors: Powerful processing capabilities are needed to run AI algorithms.
  4. Speakers: Users will receive audio responses from the AI.

See the New York Times‘ video below.

Early testing reveals potential and limitations

The New York Times’ early experience with the AI features suggests the technology is still under development. The glasses demonstrated proficiency in some areas but struggled to identify objects at a distance or less common items.

Release, availability, and pricing

Meta has confirmed the AI-enhanced Ray-Ban smart glasses will be unveiled next month. While official pricing hasn’t been announced, it’s speculated that the new model may cost more than the current generation of Ray-Ban smart glasses due to the additional AI technology.

Details regarding specific release dates and regional availability are likely to be announced at the official launch.
