The popular social media platform TikTok has taken an important step in increasing online safety for young people and creating a more inclusive environment. TikTok established the “TikTok Youth Council“, where 15 young people from different countries come together, thus giving young people an important role in the platform’s future.
The main task of the Youth Council is to provide feedback on important elements of the platform, such as the Youth Portal and TikTok’s reporting tools.
It will also guide on sensitive issues such as bullying and body image, contributing to a safer and more respectful platform environment.
What does the research say?
Research shows that young people and parents need more open communication about online safety. According to a UK study, only half of young people talk to their parents about online platforms every month.
More transparency and accountability with TikTok Youth Council
With the establishment of the Youth Council, TikTok also aims to ensure greater transparency and accountability on the platform. Council members will play an active role in developing the platform’s policies on safety and inclusion.
Additional measures for a safe and inclusive platform from TikTok
In addition to the Youth Council, TikTok is taking various measures to ensure a safe experience on the platform by offering parental controls such as Family Matching and resources such as the Safety Center. It also aims to improve the digital skills of young people and parents by launching more than 10 media literacy campaigns throughout 2024.
Establishing the “TikTok Youth Council” concretely demonstrates TikTok’s commitment to online safety and its efforts to make the platform more inclusive. Hopefully, this initiative will contribute to a safer and more respectful environment on the platform and improve young people’s online experiences.
