According to the latest news, Apple RCS support is coming to iPhones next year. Even though we don’t have an exact timeframe for now, Apple is currently working on the new feature, which will be out sooner or later than a year.
Apple has adopted the Rich Communication Services (RCS) messaging standard. This development, scheduled for a software update expected “later next year,” signals a major change in how iPhone users interact with their Android counterparts. Apple, known for its exclusive iMessage system, is now opening the door to a more universal messaging experience.
This revelation came when Apple faced increasing pressure from regulators and competitors like Google and Samsung. Once in its early stages, the RCS standard has matured into a powerful platform, influencing Apple’s strategic direction. As the messaging landscape evolves, Apple is gearing up to meet the demands of users who want seamless communication across different platforms.
Apple RCS support will bridge the gap for cross-platform messages
According to a statement from an Apple spokesperson to 9to5Mac, the Apple RCS support is seen as a crucial element in improving interoperability for cross-platform messages. RCS will introduce various iMessage-style features to messaging between iPhones and Android devices, including read receipts, typing indicators, high-quality image and video sharing, and more.
With RCS integration, users can now share their locations within text threads, a feature not available in traditional SMS. RCS is able to operate over mobile data and Wi-Fi, providing a more flexible and efficient messaging experience. However, iMessage, Apple’s proprietary platform, will remain the primary choice for communication among iPhone users. The Apple RCS support will supersede SMS and MMS while coexisting independently from iMessage. According to Apple, SMS and MMS will still be available as fallback options when needed.

Enhancing the iPhone messaging experience
While the specific timing of delivery is unknown, the addition of Apple RCS support promises to significantly enhance how messages are sent between Apple iPhones and other devices. Typing indications, high-quality media sharing, and in-line responses, which are now available on Android phones via the Google Messages app, will soon be available on the iPhone texting experience.
Apple’s choice to adopt RCS deviates from the company’s past commitment to iMessage. Apple has been under pressure from competitors such as Samsung and Google to reevaluate its message approach over the years. While enhancements to SMS interactions with Android devices have already been made, the switch to RCS underlines Apple’s commitment to remaining at the forefront of communications technology.
Looking forward, Apple has committed to further working with GSMA members to refine the RCS protocol. Security and encryption are focal points of this collaboration, with Apple emphasizing its dedication to the integrity of RCS messages. Crucially, Apple asserts that it will avoid introducing proprietary end-to-end encryption on top of RCS, redirecting its focus towards enhancing the RCS standard itself. This move is poised to set new standards for secure and efficient cross-platform messaging.
