Elon Musk recently revealed a game-changing development plan for the X platform in a tweet, saying that the platform will only support dark mode going forward. Users who dislike dark mode were immediately alarmed by this statement because viewing light-colored text on a dark backdrop can often be difficult. Musk, though, declared with assurance that this change is clearly superior in every way.
With thousands of likes and retweets, Elon Musk’s tweet from July 27th, in response to a quotation retweet about converting the blue tick to a black tick, has gone viral. In the tweet, Musk announced that the platform would soon only support “dark mode,” highlighting how superior it was in every way.
Currently, Twitter allows users to switch between light mode, dark mode, and dim mode, which falls somewhere in the middle and uses a dark blue background instead of a black one. However, it appears that Elon Musk’s recent announcement would gradually phase out both the light and dim settings, leaving customers with a permanent dark mode setting.

Although the proposed user interface (UI) update is unusual, it will blend in with the current X logo, which has black writing on a white background. On a white background, the logo sticks out, but when the dark mode is on, it blends in well. Not all users, however, have praised this change, and some have voiced worries that dark mode makes it harder for them to read text.
Depending on the user’s preferences, Twitter now offers three distinct background settings: light mode, “dim” with a dark blue or gray background, and “lights out” with a completely black background.
Additionally, it’s unclear whether this would be permitted in accordance with the individual app store standards of Apple and/or Google. Developers claim that while generally OK, this isn’t fully preferred from the OS’s point of view, which may mean that a program of X’s size won’t be allowed to make such a substantial modification.
But Elon has so far been successful in implementing all of the modifications he has tried to make to the app, both good and bad, and as a result, it appears that X will continue to advocate for dark mode only going ahead.
After taking over as the company’s new CEO last month, Linda Yaccarino provided further information about the new X app. She tweeted on Sunday that the rebranding sought to expand “the global town square” beyond a social network.
Twitter rebranding stopped by police
“X is the future state of unlimited interactivity – centered in audio, video, messaging, payments/banking – creating a global marketplace for ideas, goods, services, and opportunities. Powered by AI, X will connect us all in ways we’re just beginning to imagine,” Yaccarino tweeted.
Musk backed down on only dark mode on X
After declaring that Twitter / X would “soon only have a ‘dark mode'” since it is “better in every way,” Musk has since changed his mind, adding that “A lot of people have asked to keep light mode, so we will, but the default will be dark and dim will be deleted.”
