The first Android 14 preview, the upcoming big update to the smartphone operating system, was made available by Google last month. Every year, Google releases a new version of Android. Before the final release, platform stability work and developer previews are included in the lengthy development process.

Android 14’s second Development Preview is currently accessible. It is the final preview before the April 2023 release of the first beta.

The initial release included support for passkeys, a forthcoming security feature that enables third-party Android apps to manage passkeys on behalf of users.

What’s new with Second Android 14 Preview?

New features and modifications are included in the second Android 14 release, along with improvements to features that were present in the first preview.

An overview of significant adjustments in Android 14 Development Preview 2 is provided below:

  • Partial access to images and videos – Android users can give apps in Android 14 limited access to their photos and videos. Android users can now choose which photographs and videos they want an app to have access to, in addition to the already available full access and restrict access choices.
  • Dismissing non-dismissible foreground notifications – Android users may dismiss non-dismissible foreground notifications. When the phone is locked or the user chooses to remove all notifications, the new behavior does not apply to non-dismissible notifications. It’s also not worth mentioning that it does not apply to all use cases, such as notifications made with MediaStyle.
  • Enhanced regional preferences settings – On Android 14, go to System > Languages & input > Regional preferences to specify regional preferences for the weather, the first day of the week, and numbers.

  • Media owner package names may be redacted – Unless the application’s package name is always available to other apps or the inquiring app has the QUERY ALL PACKAGES permission, Android 14 may redact media owner package names.
  • Limitations on beginning tasks from the background – By blocking dangerous apps from exploiting APIs to launch disruptive activities from the background, the modifications, which you can discover here, are intended to protect users.
  • On Android 14, apps can only terminate their own background processes.
  • Improvements to app stores – Before downloading, install approval may be requested; there is a new way to take ownership of future updates; this prevents anyone other than the updated owner from installing automatic updates; and application updates at less-disturbing times.
  • A Google Wallet error that prohibited cards from being enabled was also fixed in the second development version of Android 14.

Second Android 14 Preview: Users of Android should first evaluate the most urgently pressing open issues

Users of Android should first evaluate the most pressing open issues if they want to try the new preview. The preview can be downloaded manually. For several Pixel devices, Google created previews (from Pixel 4a 5G and newer).
