TikTok-ification of Reddit

  • Reddit plans to launch new features later this year, including two view modes called Watch and Read, an option to search post comments, and an improved user interface.
  • The Watch mode is designed to filter video content and display it in full-screen mode, similar to how TikTok presents videos.
  • The Read mode optimizes content for text browsing, providing a streamlined reading experience.
  • Other improvements include a decluttered interface, chat enhancements, an updated web platform, and the ability to watch video content while engaging in conversations.

Reddit recently announced its future plans. These exciting updates include the introduction of two new feed modes named Watch and Read, a feature that allows users to search comments of a post, and an enhanced user interface.

Reddit unveils its upcoming features

New features will be initially available on the Reddit app, with the possibility of being implemented on the web-based version of the site in the future. With these updates, Reddit aims to enhance the overall user experience and provide a more seamless browsing experience for its users.

A tailored browsing experience

Reddit’s new view modes, Watch and Read, are set to offer users a more streamlined experience tailored to their specific interests. The social media platforms’ diverse content types, including text, image, and video, make a one-size-fits-all view mode less than ideal for some users.

Watch mode prioritizes video content, filtering other content types so that users can view a curated feed of video content exclusively. This feature is designed to cater to users who prefer consuming video content over other content types and enhance the video-watching experience on the site.

Watch mode, read mode, and more

In addition to creating a filtered feed, Watch mode also introduces a new fullscreen view for videos in the Reddit app. This immersive view allows users to view videos without distractions while displaying key post information such as the title, likes, and comments.

The similarity between this new view mode and TikTok’s video display format cannot be ignored. The Watch mode’s presentation style appears to be inspired by the popular social media app, which could potentially attract TikTok users to Reddit. Overall, Reddit’s updates demonstrate a commitment to enhancing the user experience and keeping up with the latest trends in social media.

Reddit’s second new mode, Read, is designed to optimize content for text browsing, providing users with a simpler and more streamlined reading experience. At first glance, Read mode looks similar to Reddit’s classic mode.

Currently, the Reddit app supports two views: the card-based view and the classic view. The card-based view displays posts as individual cards, complete with titles, images, and other pertinent information. On the other hand, the classic view features only post titles and basic information. With Read mode, Reddit seeks to bridge the gap between the two views, providing users with a more text-focused browsing experience while still displaying important post details.

It’s worth noting that the upcoming Watch and Read views share similarities with the existing card-based and classic views, respectively. However, the key difference is that Watch and Read are specifically optimized for video content and text browsing, respectively.

It’s also worth mentioning that third-party Reddit apps, such as Boost and others, offer a range of features that are not available in the default Reddit app. For instance, Boost supports eight different view modes, including gallery view, cards, slideshows, and compact view, among others. Additionally, Boost offers a customizable option that allows users to tailor their experience to their preferences. These third-party apps provide users with a more personalized experience, and it will be interesting to see how Reddit’s new features stack up against them.

Enhancing user experience

Reddit is also working on various other improvements to enhance the user experience on its official application. One of these improvements is the ability to search through post comments. This feature will be particularly useful for large threads where users may need to find specific information buried in the comments section.

Additionally, Reddit is aiming to streamline the application’s interface, although the specifics of this change are yet to be revealed. However, the company has made it clear that it wants to make the application more user-friendly with this design decision.

Other improvements on the horizon include the ability to watch video content on Reddit while engaging in conversations, an updated web platform that delivers fast and reliable experiences, chat enhancements, and more. These improvements demonstrate Reddit’s commitment to staying on the cutting edge of social media and providing users with an engaging and seamless experience.
