The films will be developed by the creative geniuses over at WB’s New Line Cinema label. If you thought the original “Lord of the Rings” trilogy directed by Peter Jackson was a box office hit, grossing nearly $3 billion worldwide, just wait until you see what these new films have in store! Even Jackson’s follow-up trilogy based on “The Hobbit” couldn’t quite match the moolah of the OG “Lord of the Rings” films, but hey, let’s see if WB can make some magic happen.
No need to rush out to buy your new Lord of the Rings movies’ tickets just yet, as the studio has yet to announce any directors or writers for the upcoming projects. However, in a statement to Variety, “Lord of the Rings” mastermind Peter Jackson and his trusty collaborators Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens assured fans that they’ve been kept in the loop by Warner Bros. and Embracer every step of the way.
It’s nice to know that the OG team is in the loop, but we can’t help but wonder who will be the brave soul to take on the task of bringing Tolkien’s intricate world to life once again. Let’s just hope they don’t disappoint the legions of passionate fans out there.
“We look forward to speaking with them further to hear their vision for the franchise moving forward,” Jackson, Walsh and Boyens stated.
Middle-earth Enterprises makes adaptive rights deal for new Lord of the Rings movies
Well, it seems that the bigwigs over at Embracer Group’s Freemode division have been quite busy snagging the adaptive rights to some pretty iconic books, including J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit.” This deal will be touted under the fancy name “Middle-earth Enterprises,” so you know it’s gotta be legit.
What’s more, it turns out that Warner Bros.’ new studio leaders, Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy, jumped ship from MGM to take on their current roles. This move came after Amazon gobbled up MGM and snagged the TV rights to “Lord of the Rings.” In fact, the tech behemoth dropped a whopping $450 million on producing just one season of the show in 2022. Looks like there’s a whole lotta Middle-earth action happening in the entertainment industry these days!
Following our recent acquisition of Middle-earth Enterprises, we’re thrilled to embark on this new collaborative journey with New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Pictures, bringing the incomparable world of J.R.R. Tolkien back to the big screen in new and exciting ways. We understand how cherished these works are and working together with our partners at New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Pictures, we plan to honor the past, look to the future, and adhere to the strongest level of quality and production values.”
-Lee Guinchard, CEO of Freemode.
De Luca and Abdy reminded that New Line “took an unprecedented leap of faith to realize the incredible stories, characters and world of ‘The Lord of the Rings’ on the big screen … but for all the scope and detail lovingly packed into the two trilogies, the vast, complex and dazzling universe dreamed up by J.R.R. Tolkien remains largely unexplored.”
We’re still waiting with bated breath to hear more about these exciting new Lord of the Rings movies, including which characters we’ll be following, what kind of epic battles we’ll be witnessing, and, most importantly, who’s going to direct the whole shebang. Unfortunately, no juicy details about the inaugural projects or release dates have been dropped just yet, so we’ll have to be patient for a little longer.
In the meantime, Warner Bros. has a jam-packed schedule of films coming our way. We’ve got “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” arriving in just a few short weeks, followed by “The Flash” starring Ezra Miller and the highly anticipated “Barbie” flick, directed by Greta Gerwig and featuring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. And who could forget about “Meg 2: The Trench,” where Jason Statham will once again face off against a giant prehistoric shark? Plus, we’ve got DC’s “Blue Beetle” on the horizon, courtesy of New Line. So, while we wait for more news about the new Lord of the Rings movies, we’ll have plenty of other blockbuster films to keep us occupied.
It seems that Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy, the dynamic duo leading the charge at Warner Bros.’ New Line Cinema, are pretty excited to dive back into the wild and wonderful world of J.R.R. Tolkien’s “Lord of the Rings” franchise. They fondly recall New Line’s daring move to bring Tolkien’s vision to life on the big screen, but it seems they’re itching to explore the depths of Middle-earth even further.
As they put it, while the previous trilogies were chock full of epic scope and impressive attention to detail, there’s still so much more of Tolkien’s complex and dazzling universe left to uncover. Who knows what new realms, creatures, and adventures await us in the upcoming new Lord of the Rings movies? We can’t wait to find out!
