If you are one of the players asking like “What does Siphon mean in Fortnite,” get ready to learn the latest “augment” mechanic! The Siphon feature has come back in Fortnite’s Chapter 4 Season 1 after the release of the 23.20 update. This guide provides information on how the Siphon function operates in the game, and how players can employ it to gain an edge in matches.
The 23.20 update for Fortnite brought a lot of exciting new content to the game, maintaining its popularity as players await Chapter 4 Season 2. The update included the new Falcon Scout item which can be used during matches, and also announced a Dead Space crossover event coming in the future.
The update reintroduced the Siphon feature to the battle royale games after a long absence, adding an exciting new aspect to the matches. However, as not all players are familiar with Siphon, completing weekly Quests can be challenging. The following guide provides all the information required to understand and utilize the Siphon mechanic in Fortnite.
What does Siphon mean in Fortnite?
Siphon is a game mechanic in Fortnite that replenishes a player’s health and shields whenever they cause damage or eliminate an opponent. This allows players to continue fighting without the need to pause and heal. It’s a perfect feature for those who prefer to be aggressive and aim for high kill games. It can make the matches more intense, as each hit deals damage to one player while healing the other by the same amount, resulting in a back and forth dynamic as teams strive to balance health and damage.
Epic Games has previously tested this feature in the past, including in a limited time mode (LTM) released in December, and it is a common feature in competitive matches. However, it was briefly included in Fortnite Season 7 but was taken out as it resulted in excessively aggressive gameplay.

Why is it called Siphon?
The mechanic known as “Siphon” was first introduced in the “Siphon Limited Time Mode” in Fortnite on December 20th, as part of the 14 Days of Fortnite event. This mode only allowed players to regain shield or health by killing opponents, unlike the current version of the Siphon mechanic.
The v22.30 update added five new Reality Augments, two of which allow players to activate the Siphon effect through the use of shotguns or weapons with lower rarity. As long as players use the appropriate weapons to inflict damage and score kills, they will notice that this feature is restoring their shield and health.
For a brief period, all Fortnite players were required to play with these mechanics. Epic Games added them in the v7.40 update in Season 7 to all default playlists, making it the default playstyle for all Battle Royale game modes for a time. However, due to an excessive level of aggressive play, the company removed this mechanic in the v8.20 update in the next season, but left it intact in competitive modes. Many players associate the increased harvesting rate with Siphon mechanics from that period, but there was no such increase in the original game mode.
It appears that Epic Games is experimenting with the idea of incorporating more Siphon mechanics into the game as part of the Augment system. These mechanics are likely to give some players an advantage as long as they are able to eliminate the enemy and meet the necessary requirements.

How to use the augment mechanic in Fortnite Chapter 4 Season 1?
The Siphon feature can be utilized in Fortnite through Reality Augments, the new perks added in the Chapter 4 Season 1 update. Currently, there are two Augments that incorporate Siphoning in their abilities – Shotgun Striker and Rarity Check. Shotgun Striker will activate the effect on any shotgun that you pick up, while Rarity Check will do the same for all common and uncommon weapons.
Unfortunately, there is no surefire way to obtain either of these Reality Augments in a match. As they were before the update, these perks are randomly assigned in each game, so players must rely on luck to obtain them.
