Away messages were a blank canvas for spilling one’s planned thoughts and feelings for all to see. They were host to many a cryptic selection of emo lyrics, hints of incredibly exciting plans certain to make others envy, terrible efforts at smart jokes, and promises of teenage love consisting simply of initials and proto-emojis like “<3”. Away messages, unlike tweets or Facebook status updates, stayed attached to a specific person.
So far, people appear to be flocking to Notes, if only for nostalgia. Sure, the text-based feature appears to be a clear dig at Twitter, which is losing users in droves, but Instagram isn’t exactly known for its inventiveness these days. Enjoy your oversharing!
