In this article, we are going to be covering how to mute subreddits on Reddit, which now you can do thanks to a fresh update on the Reddit apps.
Reddit said in a post to /r/reddit that it has begun rolling out a tool that will allow users to mute particular groups that include information they do not wish to view. If you use this tool to mute a subreddit, articles from that subreddit will no longer appear in your alerts, home feed suggestions, or Popular, Reddit’s feed of the most upvoted material from all its many communities. Reddit intends to expand muting to additional areas such as “All” and “Discover” in the future. Muting a community will not prevent you from visiting or posting in it.
In the post, Reddit stated:
“We are excited to announce our new feature, “community muting”, which we will begin rolling out on mobile apps today. This feature gives you more control over what you do and don’t want to see on Reddit. You may have seen a few teasers about this feature (here and here)–that’s because muting is part of a larger effort to give redditors more control over their Reddit experience. We’ll be rolling this feature out in the apps over the next few weeks, so if you don’t see it right away, keep your eyes peeled.”
There are a handful of specific subreddits that are pervasive on Popular that make me roll my eyes; their popularity discourages me from visiting Popular on a regular basis. Because Popular collects high-performing posts from a wide range of interests and communities, this is most likely accurate for a large number of individuals. This innovation addresses that issue and may encourage some people to check out the Popular feed. In Settings, you may mute up to 1,000 communities and change your muted list at any moment.
Unfortunately, for the time being, this new muting option is only accessible in Reddit’s iOS and Android applications. This isn’t the first time Reddit has pushed new functionality to mobile devices early. In recent years, it has become a very typical occurrence. Nonetheless, Reddit made it quite clear this time that the new muting option will be available on both the desktop and the web. The announcement article links readers to Reddit’s changelog feed for information on rollouts to other platforms.
How to mute subreddits?
If you don’t want to see material from a community for whatever reason, you may mute it by using the overflow menu or going to your user preferences. According to Reddit’s help center:
- To mute a community from your Home or Popular feed tap “…” and select Mute r/[Community name].
- To mute a community from Settings go to your Account Settings and find the Blocking and Permissions section. There you will see the option to Manage muted communities.
- To mute a community from a recommendation tap “…” and select Show fewer posts like this. After selecting your preference of seeing less of This individual post or Posts from this community, you will get the additional option to mute the community.
- To mute a community from a community page select the “…” option then tap Mute.
If you don’t want to completely silence a community, you can still change or disable notifications from certain communities under your Notification Settings. Furthermore, if you modify your notification choices for a muted community, opting into notifications will remove it from your muted community list and allow you to view the community in your recommendations and feeds again. Muting can be used to prevent viewing the material that a community distributes, but if the community you’re blocking has also violated Reddit’s Content Policy rules against harassment, threatening violence, hatred, or anything else, you should report the rule-breaking content.
