The iPhone 14 Pro Max was announced on September 7th during an Apple event, exposing all you need to know to make an informed iPhone 14 Pro Max vs iPhone 13 Pro Max comparison. This is the new top dog in the iPhone 14 series, and it provides some major improvements over the iPhone 13 Pro Max, making the 14 Pro Max a solid candidate for the greatest phone you can purchase right now. Surpassing the iPhone 13 Pro Max, on the other hand, appears to be a difficult task. Now that we’ve heard everything from Apple, here’s a detailed overview of the significant changes between the iPhone 14 Pro Max and the iPhone 13 Pro Max.

iPhone 14 Pro Max vs iPhone 13 Pro Max price

Despite predictions that the iPhone 14 Pro models will be $100 more expensive, Apple elected to maintain the iPhone 14 Pro Max at the same $1,099 starting price as its predecessor. This keeps the Pro Max only a bit cheaper than Samsung’s Galaxy S22 Ultra, the closest competitor to the iPhone Pro Max variant. If you don’t want to pay four digits for a new phone, Apple is also selling the iPhone 14 Pro for $999, however, with taxes and fees you’ll still pay more than $1,000.

iPhone 14 Pro Max vs iPhone 13 Pro Max design and display

At first impression, the iPhone 14 Pro Max seems similar to its predecessor, with flat borders enclosing a 6.7-inch display that dominates the phone’s front. The most noticeable difference is a large pill-shaped hole in the middle of the top of the display that houses the phone’s camera array, replacing the smaller notch from last year’s phones.

This rectangular cutout has been dubbed the Dynamic Island by Apple, and iOS is being developed to move around it, with notifications and status indications appearing to surround or pop out of it. The iPhone 14 Pro Max retains the same 6.7-inch OLED display as its predecessor, but this time it’s designed with an always-on display to showcase your lock screen, which is more customizable than ever with iOS 16.

The graphite, silver, and gold hues from the iPhone 13 Pro Max are still available, as is a new Deep Purple shade; however, Apple appears to have dropped the blue and green color options from last year’s model.

The new iPhone 14 Pro Max has the same adaptive refresh rate technology as its predecessor, but where the iPhone 13 Pro Max could only go down to 10Hz, the new iPhone 14 Pro Max can go down to 1Hz. This helps the always-on display conserve battery, which is comparable to a function available on Samsung’s Galaxy S22 Ultra.

iPhone 14 Pro Max vs iPhone 13 Pro Max cameras

While the iPhone 14 Pro Max has the same back camera array as its predecessor, with wide, ultrawide, and telephoto lenses, expect a significant modification to the primary camera. The iPhone 14 Pro Max now boasts a 48MP primary camera up front, putting a stop to years of 12MP sensors in Apple’s phones. That new sensor should help the iPhone 14 Pro Max take better images, and Apple promises that its new Photonic Engine technology will boost the quality of low-light photos taken with the iPhone 14 Pro Max even more.

The iPhone 14 Pro Max is also better at video capture than its predecessor, as it can now shoot films in cinematic mode (for shallow depth of focus) at up to 30 frames per second in 4K HDR, whereas its predecessor could only do so at 1080p with no HDR. The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max now have access to a new Action Mode for filming fast-paced action films.

When all of these modifications are considered, it appears that the iPhone 14 Pro Max will deliver a better photography experience than the iPhone 13 Pro Max – amazing, given that the latter phone currently rates as the greatest camera phone in our opinion. Of course, we’ll have to wait till we get our hands on one.

iPhone 14 Pro Max vs iPhone 13 Pro Max performance

The iPhone 14 Pro Max is powered by Apple’s A16 Bionic technology, an enhanced version of the A15 Bionic found in last year’s model. This new A16 Bionic features a 6-core CPU with two performance cores and four efficiency cores, a 5-core GPU, and a 16-core Neural Engine.

The new chipset is likewise constructed using a 4-nanometer technology, as opposed to its predecessor’s 5nm process. Simply put, these specifications indicate that the iPhone 14 Pro Max will be quicker and more powerful than the iPhone 13 Pro Max, but not by much. Though Apple claims the A16 consumes 20% less power than the A15 and has 50% greater memory bandwidth than its predecessor, we doubt it will be a significant upgrade.

Power management is critical now that the iPhone 14 Pro Max has an always-on display, and the A16 is intended to control the display and its 1-120Hz refresh rate intelligently to preserve power.

iPhone 14 Pro Max vs iPhone 13 Pro Max battery

Apple raised battery sizes across the board for the iPhone 13 series, with the iPhone 13 Pro Max getting a 4,352 mAh cell. This contributed to the phone lasting 12 hours on battery tests.

Apple appears to have made minor changes to the battery for the iPhone 14 Pro Max, merely marginally increasing its mAh capacity. Nonetheless, with the A16 Bionic chipset’s probable power efficiency gains and the phone’s 1-120Hz display, the iPhone 14 Pro Max should be able to keep up with its predecessor. Apple claims the iPhone 14 Pro Max can play video for up to 29 hours on a single charge, which is one hour longer than the iPhone 13 Pro Max’s promise of 28 hours.

While competitor Android handsets compete for faster and quicker charging speeds, both iPhones continue to charge at 20W. Despite rumors that Apple was working on 30W charging earlier this year, the iPhone 14 Pro Max still uses a 20W charger and, like its predecessor, Apple claims it can reach 50% capacity after 30 minutes of charging.

Conclusion

The iPhone 13 Pro Max was a near-perfect phone that set the standard for every phone that came after it, including the iPhone 14 Pro Max. Now that Apple has shown the new model, we can’t wait to get our hands on it and put it through its paces. We’ll soon find out if Apple’s next phone is equal to the task of outdoing last year’s model, but we’re already enthusiastic about the introduction of a 1-120Hz always-on display and a broader, fatter camera cutout that’s more tightly integrated with iOS.
