Gather folks! Mafia will be free on Steam for a brief period. From September 1 to September 5, 2K Games is giving away the original open-world game for free in honor of Mafia’s 20th anniversary.
This information follows 2K Games’ May announcement that a new Mafia game was under development. Although the new game is still in its early stages of production, we do know that Unreal Technology 5 will be used to create it rather than the Mafia III engine that was used to create the remaster. We also know that it has the working title Nero and that the Mafia trilogy prequel is what is anticipated.

Mafia provides a more grounded tale that is reminiscent of classic movies like Goodfellas and The Godfather and concentrates on old-school criminal families in contrast to the zanier antics of 2K Games’ Grand Theft Auto franchise. You take on the role of Tommy Angelo, a humble taxi driver in the 1930s, as he is thrust into Illinois’s criminal underworld and develops into one of the Salieri family’s most dreaded mob figures.
Downloading the original Mafia game to participate in the celebrations of the franchise’s anniversary has a significant advantage over purchasing the Mafia Definitive Edition, even though the series was given the remastered treatment with new dialogue and cutscenes, tighter combat, and updated visuals with 4K and HDR support back in 2014.
In addition to the apparent benefit of being free, downloading the original game allows you to listen to the copyrighted music from the original game that the Definitive Edition was unable to include, such as Moanin’ For You by The Mills Brothers. Mafia Definitive Edition suffered from the same licensing issues that caused Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition, 2K’s most recent remake, to lose several of its music.
The story of the original Mafia game
The Salieri family and the Morello family, two significant mafia families, compete for control of the city’s rackets in the game’s main plot following the death of a third mafia family. In addition to the two gangs, the city is home to other smaller street gangs.
The city’s design draws heavily from historical American cities like New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles. This includes the architectural styles, public transportation, and landmarks. The setting’s total area is approximately 4.63 square miles (12.0 km2).
Poor cab driver Tommy Angelo is coerced in 1930 by Salieri crime family members Paulie and Sam to aid them in escaping an ambush by the rival Morello family. Tommy receives payment for his assistance and a job offer from Don Salieri’s organization. The following day, when two Morello criminals find him and smash his cab as payback, he is compelled to accept the offer.
Tommy is accepted into the Salieri family and immediately gets to work helping Frank Colletti, Salieri’s trusted consigliere, manage their rackets around the city. As they work on various tasks together, Tommy rapidly makes friends with Sam and Paulie and gains Salieri’s respect for thwarting Don Morello’s attempts to meddle in his business…
Mafia was initially inspired by movies like The Godfather and Goodfellas in order to give the game a more somber and mature feel. In order to enhance the reality of the game, director Daniel Vavra strove to blend humor, action, and drama to create a dynamic story line. When Daniel Vavra took over as the game’s narrative writer, the development team’s original plan to cast players as a police officer battling the Mafia was abandoned.
