The highly awaited release of Andor’s first teaser has finally given Star Wars fans a glance at the impending Rogue One prequel, including Stellan Skarsgard’s character. The ambitious Disney+ series Andor, starring Swedish screen legend Skarsgard, was first announced in 2020, but as is customary for the studio, LucasFilm has kept virtually every aspect of the project under wraps during production, with Andor’s new trailer providing key information on what to expect from the Rebellion’s rise.
Skarsgard has been performing for almost five decades, and at 70 years old, the Emmy-nominated actress shows no signs of slowing down. In reality, he has redefined his career for a whole new generation of moviegoers with the part of Dr. Erik Selvig in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Thor film, as well as cameos in The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron, since 2011. Skarsgard most recently played Baron Harkonnen in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune, and he will return for Dune: Part Two in 2023.
Stellan Skarsgard’s role in Star Wars Andor
Given the influence that Frank Herbert’s original Dune novels had on George Lucas’ development of the Star Wars universe, it’s only right that Skarsgard’s next part in Andor would take him to a galaxy far, far away. Skarsgard will portray a Rebel leader named Luther Rand [we are currently seeking confirmation on this name], a totally new character to the Star Wars world set during the Rebellion’s emergence. While the specifics of Skarsgard’s character and journey are undisclosed, showrunner Tony Gilroy announced at Star Wars Celebration 2022 that he will play a “major part” in the series.
Skarsgard, who has been acting since before the 1977 release of A New Hope, will be making his first foray into the vast realm of Star Wars. It was the 2016 release of Rogue One that originally piqued his interest. According to the actor (via The Daily Beast):
“I’ve had children in five decades, which means you’ve seen all the Star Wars films—and seen all the toys as well. But when I saw Rogue One, it had much more atmosphere and seemed a little more mature…”
In addition to reuniting with his old buddy, Diego Luna, who portrays the movie and show’s protagonist Cassian Andor, Skarsgard revealed that Rogue One writer Tony Gilroy is associated with Andor as showrunner was a huge part of why he was interested in completing the project.
Andor season 1 will consist of 12 episodes and will premiere on Disney+ on August 31, 2022. While additional information about Skarsgard’s Rebel commander role will most certainly emerge in the months leading up to the show’s highly anticipated launch, Andor’s great cast and fresh new teaser trailer will have to suffice in the meanwhile. Fiona Shaw, Adria Arjona, Denise Gough, and Kyle Soller will join Skarsgard and Diego Luna, with Genevieve O’Reilly and Forest Whitaker returning their earlier Star Wars roles as Rebel Alliance co-founder Mon Mothma and Clone Wars veteran Saw Gerrera, respectively.
