What is Steam Survival Fest?
The month of August will kick off with a Steam survival game festival, which will highlight a variety of current and upcoming survival-themed PC games on the storefront. Valve said it aims to include various survival games, including survival horror games and open-world survival crafting games. The Steam Survival Fest will take place from August 1 to 8 at 10 a.m. PT/1 p.m. ET/6 p.m. BST. “participating games must have survival as the primary game mechanic,” according to Valve. It emphasizes the need to “focus on using defensive tactics to stay in the game against destructive forces including nature or supernatural beings.”
As with past comparable events such as Steam Next Fest, the games involved will be advertised on the Steam site. To be featured in the festival, games do not have to provide a discount, however, Valve claims that “the Steam Survival Fest page will prominently feature discounted games.” Future game demos are also encouraged.
Valve has also offered a list of game mechanics that they believe best represent the style of game they want to include. Games that include defensive gameplay; some adversity the player must overcome; resource and health management such as hunger/thirst; conflict between several groups or individuals trying to survive; and sim or building games with survival elements such as “NPCs that attack or environmental damage the player needs to shelter from” are among those they consider suitable.
There is also a list of games that are not eligible for the event, which includes “games in which the primary aim is to inflict harm on others” such as battle royale games and MOBAs, multiplayer games, and MMOs without a specific survival element, and pure horror or tower defense games that do not fall under the survival banner.
Extraneous language in-game images on the Steam store will be prohibited under new regulations that go into force in September. The storefront’s Discovery Queue has also been revamped in Steam Labs to make it more appropriate for platforms like the Steam Deck. Meanwhile, Valve has announced that all Steam Deck reservations will ship in 2022, so everyone who has been waiting for the portable should be able to get their hands on it shortly.
