Don’t you know what to watch before Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness? We are here to help. We love a fantastic superhero narrative as much as anybody, but the Marvel Cinematic Universe is continuously growing. The days of watching every film before the newest releases on Disney+ would take a lot of weekends.
What to watch before Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness?
So, for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which opens on May 6, we’re going to explain everything by just focusing on the titles that are most relevant to this time-bending sequel. Now let’s learn what to watch before Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness below.
Doctor Strange (2016)
Of course, we can’t talk about the role of Doctor Strange without discussing it. Even if it’s only in the middle of the Marvel Cinematic Universe canon, Doctor Strange establishes the important groundwork for the Mystic Arts, Sorcerers Supreme, and the Dark Dimension. Stephen is warned against manipulating time by Wong, Mordo, and the Ancient One. But he uses the Eye of Agamoto a.k.a. Time Stone to defeat Dormammu, Kaecilius, and the Dark Dimension after that.
Strange’s former golden child, Mordo, takes this badly and sets out to strip sorcerers all over the world of their abilities in an ostensible quest for revenge. The Ancient One is no longer alive, leaving only Wong to keep Strange and his time-bending under control and we’ve seen how that ends in the past.
Avengers: Endgame
Avengers: Endgame is a big job, but Marvel’s the-only-rule-isn’t-there approach to time travel serves as a wonderful primer for how Marvel likes to wink cheekily at cinematic precedence for astrophysics and then look the other way. The Ancient One does an excellent explainer of timelines and universes, which proved very useful for other films on this list.
WandaVision Season 1, episodes 8 and 9
Despite the fact that it appears to take place in a universe in which its title characters live happily ever after, WandaVision isn’t the most multiversey of all. Agatha must catch up on Wanda’s journey before we see her in Multiverse of Madness, as episode 8 has Agatha walking through her life from childhood to Ultron to Infinity War events that led her to Westview. Despite our prior knowledge of her tale, this is the first time we see it from Wanda’s perspective.
In Season 3, Episode 9 is an encounter between the two witches and S.W.O.R.D.’s attempt to pit Vision against Vision in a bid to heal their fractured friendship. The episode is conventional, but it emphasizes the emotional stakes with Wanda’s character: She lost her entire family and would risk fracturing reality itself to reclaim them.
Loki Season 1, episode 6
The finale of Loki should not have worked since it featured a monologue from a completely new character — but Jonathan Majors handles He Who Remains with ease, and we’re nowhere near tired of hearing him talk. The being responsible for the TVA, Time Keepers, and Sacred Timeline is located at the End of Time’s Citadel, where Loki and Sylvie have traveled to. He Who Remains was once a man who found the multiverse in the 31st century and became involved in a multiversal war among his own versions for domination of time.
Is it possible that there are too many cooks in the multiversal kitchen? Regardless, He Who Remains is dead; Sylvie kills him, but only after he reveals that they’ve gone into a future he doesn’t know. The timeline begins to fracture, and He Who Remains claims that he’s a walk in the park compared to what’s coming.
What If…? Season 1
If you haven’t seen If… yet, please watch it. It’s an excellent multiverse explanation with half-hour episodes that make for a manageable Multiverse release week binge. In the most recent Multiverse of Madness previews, parts from several episodes have appeared, including Dark Strange and Zombie Strange.
The Season 1 finale is a huge confrontation between characters from various dimensions in which the Watcher abandons his duty to assist because it’s so important. It’s also a nice reminder that Infinity Stones exist and vary across multiple universes, so don’t be shocked if they show up again. Strange locks Killmonger and Ultron away in a pocket dimension, promising to keep an eye on them, at the end of the episode.
Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
Is it fair to say that No Way Home makes life more difficult for everyone involved? Yes. Is it possible to correct the situation?… Maybe, maybe not. When Stephen Strange attempted to secure a few MIT students’ admission in order to preserve the universe’s fate, he made matters much worse, and now he must face the consequences as well as having a friendly neighborhood Spider-Man on his case.
