Stephen Strange, played by Benedict Cumberbatch appears to be learning that manipulating reality has consequences in Doctor Strange 2, after breaking down the multiverse in Spider-Man: No Way Home. In this new Multiverse of Madness trailer, the master of magic is way out of his depth, but will he even remember why?
Strange hasn’t had a solo film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since his title debut in 2016, but the character has made frequent appearances in other projects since then, implying that his mind-bending abilities will continue to develop. The sequel will feature the return of many past characters, including Sorcerer Supreme Wong (Benedict Wong), friend-turned-enemy Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor), and Christine Palmer (Rachel McAdams).
What does Doctor Strange 2 have to offer?
After Eternals and Spider-Man: No Way Home kept references limited, Doctor Strange 2: In The Multiverse Of Madness is set to be the first feature film to seriously engage with plot points from the MCU’s Disney+ shows. While the first film was a self-contained origin story, Doctor Strange 2 looks like it will be diving headfirst into the deep end of MCU continuity.
Wanda Maximoff, also known as the Scarlet Witch, reunites with her twin boys in previously unseen material, though it doesn’t appear to last long at the moment. While Marvel’s most renowned mages are teaming up, they’ll have to worry about their zombie selves, who were revealed in animated form in an episode of What If…? and will make their live-action debut in Doctor Strange 2. Another ominous version of Strange is seen to be developing a literal third eye.
Another video, which shows the cast announcing ticket sales, gives a better look at the new character America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez), whose superhuman punches allow her to travel through time. There’ll be a strange glowing person and Patrick Stewart as Professor X in the film’s lineup of heroes, perhaps?
