New Marvel movies and TV shows that are in the works
Following are the confirmed new Marvel movies and series that are part of Phase 4 and are currently in development:
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (May 6, 2022)
This is one of the soonest new Marvel movies that will be released and probably our closest shot at a new Avengers film for a long time. Benedict Cumberbatch reprises his role as Dr. Strange and Elizabeth Olsen returns as Scarlet Witch in the sequel, which also stars Benedict Wong, Rachel McAdams, and Chiwetel Ejiofor from Doctor Strange. The movie will also introduce Xochitl Gomez as America Chavez, a new fan favorite from the comics.
The events of the WandaVision saga will lead into the Multiverse of Madness, and the narrative will also connect to Tom Holland’s third Spider-Man film. Scott Derrickson was to return as director, but he dropped out in January 2020 due to “creative differences.” The good news is that Marvel has now hired Sam Raimi to succeed him.
Ms. Marvel (Disney+, June 8, 2022)
Coming to Disney+, this series will be about Kamala Khan, Marvel’s first mainstream Muslim hero. Newcomer Iman Vellani will play the character, a 16-year-old Pakistani-American growing up in Jersey City. Here’s how Marvel describes her on their official site:
“A great student, an avid gamer, and a voracious fan-fiction scribe, she has a special affinity for superheroes, particularly Captain Marvel. But Kamala struggles to fit in at home and at school—that is until she gets superpowers like the heroes she’s always looked up to. Life is easier with superpowers, right? The cast also includes Aramis Knight, Saagar Shaikh, Rish Shah, Zenobia Shroff, Mohan Kapur, Matt Lintz, Yasmeen Fletcher, Laith Naki, Azher Usman, Travina Springer, and Nimra Bucha. Episodes are directed by Adil El Arbi & Bilall Fallah, Meera Menon, and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.”
Thor: Love and Thunder (July 8, 2022)
One of the new Marvel movies is Thor: Love and Thunder. Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson, Natalie Portman (as a female Thor!) Chris Pratt, and Christian Bale star in the upcoming sequel to the Thor franchise, Love and Thunder. Taika Waititi returns as director for what is expected to be nearly an Avengers 5 with such a large cast. Russell Crowe has joined the cast of Thor: Love and Thunder as another thunder god named Zeus.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (November 11, 2022)
Following the tragic and untimely death of series star Chadwick Boseman, the release date for one of the new Marvel movies, the Black Panther 2 was announced and the name of the movie was changed to Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. However, it’s unclear how director Ryan Coogler will address the situation. Kevin Feige has vowed that Boseman’s image will not be recreated digitally or replaced by another actor. This is certainly one of Marvel Phase 4’s most anticipated titles.
The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special (Disney+, Holiday Season 2022)
The Guardians of the Galaxy will be back for this holiday special, which writer/director James Gunn is helming. The event occurs between events in Thor: Love and Thunder and the third Guardians film according to Gunn.
She-Hulk (Disney+, 2022)
She-Hulk, a new Disney+ series starring lawyer/green powerhouse Jennifer Walters who focuses on superhuman legal issues, will premiere this year. Orphan Black’s Tatiana Maslany will play She-Hulk, with Mark Ruffalo returning as Hulk/Bruce Banner and Tim Roth reprising his role as the Abomination. The series is directed by Kat Coiro and Anu Valia; Jessica Gao is the head writer. Disney+ Day 2021 shared the first footage of the upcoming series.
The Marvels (February 17, 2023)
One of the new Marvel movies is the Captain Marvel sequel, which is now known as The Marvels. It has Nia DaCosta at the helm. Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers will be joined by Teyonah Parris as an adult Monica Rambeau in the film, which will also feature Ms. Marvel played by Iman Vellani and who will debut in the Ms. Marvel Disney+ series.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (May 5, 2023)
One of the other new Marvel movies is Guardians Vol. 3. It was intended to be the first, if not one of the first, films in Phase 4 before James Gunn’s firing. With the deck reshuffled after his removal, and Gunn filming The Suicide Squad for DC before Vol 3., you will have to wait for a while for this one to come out.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (July 28, 2023)
The third Ant-Man movie will be directed by Peyton Reed, who previously helmed the first two installments, and star returning cast members Paul Rudd as Scott Lang/Ant-Man, Evangeline Lilly as Hope Van Dyne/Wasp, Michael Douglas as Dr. Hank Pym, and Michelle Pfeiffer as Janet Van Dyne. Kathryn Newton will play Cassie Lang while Jonathan Majors portrays Kang the Conqueror in the film.
X-Men ’97 (Disney+, 2023)
The latest X-Men spinoff, X-Men ’97, is a reboot of the original X-Men: The Animated Series from the 1990s that will pick up right where it left off. Many of the show’s original actors, including Wolverine’s Cal Dodd, Rogue’s Lenore Zann, and the Beast’s George Buza will be returning to their roles. Jennifer Hale, Ray Chase, and many more well-known actors are set to join the cast as part of the project, while Beau DeMayo takes the helm as executive producer and the head writer.
Secret Invasion (Disney+, Date TBD)
Sam Jackson will reprise his role as Nick Fury in a Disney+ series, with Kyle Bradstreet writing and executive producing. In December 2020, Kevin Feige announced that Ben Mendelsohn of Captain Marvel would star as the Skrull Talos in this adaptation of one of Marvel’s most popular comic book sagas, which focuses on a group of shapeshifting Skrulls who have been infiltrating Earth for years. Emilia Clarke, Olivia Colman, and Kingsley Ben-Adir are also expected to appear.
I Am Groot (Disney+, Date TBD)
I Am Groot will be a series of short episodes that tell the tale of Baby Groot’s “glory days growing up, and getting into trouble, among the stars,” according to executive producer and director Kristen Lepore.
Ironheart (Disney+, Date TBD)
Marvel’s Ironheart is set to feature Dominique Thorne as Riri Williams/Ironheart, a “genius inventor who creates the most advanced suit of armor since Iron Man.” While there is no immediate release date for Ironheart, it has been verified that Williams will make her debut in Black Panther 2. Williams was an engineering prodigy in the comics, using Stark’s digitized consciousness as a computer to educate her to be the greatest Ironheart possible. She can fly and fire repulsor grenades, laser beams, precision missiles, and much more with the suit.
Echo (Disney+, Date TBD)
The next series, which will star Alaqua Cox as Maya Lopez/Echo, is called Echo. In addition, Marvel’s Hawkeye will be the debut of Echo. Echo is Kingpin’s adoptive daughter and has long been linked to Daredevil. She’s a deaf Native American woman who was designed by David Mack and Joe Quesada and debuted in Daredevil Vol. 2 #9 in 1999.
Echo can mimic the fighting styles of her foes, much like Taskmaster, and wind up joining the New Avengers as the first Ronin. The Ronin name has already been taken by Hawkeye in Avengers: Endgame, so it will be interesting to see where they go with Echo’s narrative.
Agatha: House of Harkness (Disney+, Date TBD)
Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha Harkness was one of the most popular aspects of WandaVision, and she will be returning in her own spin-off series on Disney+. The executive producer and head writer for this content will be WandaVision’s Jac Schaefer. It remains to be seen when it is released, but don’t expect it to air before Phase 5 at Marvel.
Spider-Man: Freshman Year (Disney+, Date TBD)
Spider-Man: Freshman Year is an animated series that “follows Peter Parker on his way to becoming Spider-Man in the MCU, with a journey unlike we’ve ever seen and a style that celebrates the character’s early comic book roots.” It’s unclear if Tom Holland will return as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in this series, but it’s been confirmed that Jeff Trammel will co-write and executive produce the new program.
Marvel Zombies (Disney+, Date TBD)
After a possible introduction in the first season of Marvel’s What If…?, Marvel Zombies will be a new animated series that “reimagines the Marvel Universe as a new generation of heroes battle against an ever-spreading zombie scourge.” Executive producer Bryan Andrews will direct the production.
