A lot of people have been asking like “What is Rossgram?” After Instagram, which is owned by Meta, was banned in Russia, Rossgram is on its way to being released to rival the popular photo-sharing app. The Roskomnadzor, the media regulator of Russia, implemented the restriction on the platform last week following a notice. The decision to ban Instagram follows just days after Facebook was labeled a terrorist organization by Russia.

According to a tweet by Instagram’s Adam Mosseri, there are nearly 80 million users on the platform in Russia, and approximately 80% of people there follow an Instagram account from outside their country. Russian tech entrepreneurs are developing a new app to take the place of Instagram, which is said to be one of the most popular platforms for social engagement in the country. “Rossgram” will be Russia’s competitor to Instagram.
On Monday, Instagram will be blocked in Russia. This decision will cut 80 million in Russia off from one another, and from the rest of the world as ~80% of people in Russia follow an Instagram account outside their country. This is wrong.

What is Rossgram?
According to sources, the new app will be a social networking site that is set to debut later this month. Users will be able to share images and videos on the platform. The color scheme and layout of the platform appear similar to Instagram, according to the picture posted on VKontakte’s social media network by Alexander Zobov, the initiative’s public relations director.

Rossgram vs Instagram
Although the new app will provide similar functionality to Instagram, it will lack some functions that are not available on Meta’s photo-sharing app. The following features are available on the Rossgram platform: crowdfunding and paid access to certain material.
This is not the first time that Russia has attempted to minimize its reliance on Western products. In 2017, Russia’s Gazprom Media launched Yappy, a social media platform similar to TikTok, as the country’s domestic rival to the application.
