Windows 11 release date is October 5th, but it won’t have all features promised yet

Microsoft has announced that Windows 11 release date is October 5th, but it won't have every new feature promised just yet. Microsoft's Windows team unveiled the release date of Windows 11 on Tuesday during a company event at its headquarters in Redmond, Washington. It will begin rolling out this fall, on October 5th--but it won't have every new feature promised just yet.

Windows 11 will be the company’s first major operating system upgrade in six years, and it will become available as a free download for current Windows users on October 5th.

Which features won’t be available at Windows 11 launch date?

While Windows 11’s first general release will include elements such as a more simplified, Mac-like appearance, an updated Start menu, new multitasking tools, and integrated Microsoft Teams in addition to Android app support in its new app marketplace, it will not feature one of the most anticipated updates: Android mobile software support.

The company also didn’t provide a timeline for when Android apps would be accessible, only stating that they will be released in a “preview” test “over the coming months.”

Windows 11 release date is October 5th, but it won't have all features promised yetAlso, If you have a compatible Windows device doesn’t mean you’ll be able to run Windows 11 on Oct. 5. The upgrade will be “phased and managed,” with new eligible gadgets getting the update first, and the rest of the fleet getting the free upgrade some time between October 2020 and mid-2022, depending on your hardware, age of device, and other factors.

How to know if I can upgrade to Windows 11?

You’ll be notified by Windows Update when Windows 11 is ready for you, or you may check manually.

In June, when Microsoft presented Windows 11, it said the operating system would start rolling out in late 2018 and continue into 2022. Several hints suggested that the release date would be in October: A Microsoft Teams notice appeared on the demo screen during the reveal event, expressing anticipation for “October… can’t wait!”

Windows 11 release date is October 5th, but it won't have all features promised yet On certain laptops, Walmart’s website says a “free Upgrade to Windows October 2021 when available” and the taskbar in some press pictures for Windows 11 includes a date of Oct. 20.

How to download Windows 11 now?

If you’re part of the Windows Insider program, you can already download an early preview of Windows 11. You may also discover whether your computer will be able to update automatically to Windows 11 (you’ll need to run Windows 10 first). Even if it isn’t considered compatible, there will be a way to download a version that is not supported by Microsoft.
