During Google I/O 2021, Google announced the arrival of new features with Android 12 and the new update will turn your smartphone into a car key. The company aims to make our devices work together better. The tool called “digital car key”, will enable access to a car without the need for a traditional car key.
Forget your car keys, you only need an Android 12 smartphone
This feature relies on so-called Ultra Wideband (UWB) technology that is included in some of the latest smartphones and cars. The tool will be integrated directly into Android 12 and will make it possible to lock, unlock or even start the car.
In addition, in some models with NFC, it will be enough to bring the smartphone close to the car to unlock its doors. All information will be kept encrypted and secure, and if necessary, it will be possible to share the digital key with friends or family.
Initially, the digital key feature will be available on some selected Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel smartphones, and the company has confirmed that it is working with brands like BMW to bring this feature to a wider audience.
