Sharing YouTube content will have a new format: short clips. This type of content is similar to the one that used on platforms such as Twitch, it allows you to share a specific fragment of any video uploaded to the platform, also from a stream.

YouTube is still the most popular video platform in the world. However, it is also clear that there is increasing competition in the sector. Netflix, Disney+, TikTok are adding new features. Above all the company is keeping an eye on Twitch, for those who don’t know it is a platform mainly oriented to gamers and live streams.

What is Clips on YouTube?

Until now we could share the links to the YouTube video/streaming by simply copying its URL, in addition to having the share arrow right in the content options. This way is a bit cumbersome if the sharer only wants a snippet to be seen. Even though it is possible to mark the starting point, there was no way to share a specific, user-selectable portion of the video.

Clips on YouTube allows you to select a 5-60 second segment of a creator’s content.

The trim-to-share function already exists and it is currently being tested on the famous video platform. This is what the platform says on its blog.

“Clips on YouTube allows you to select a 5-60 second segment of a creator’s content (video uploads and streams) that can be shared with others across platforms. If you’re viewing content from one of the channels in this experiment, you’ll see a clip icon under the video that will allow you to select a portion of the video that you want to clip,” YouTube officials say.
