The importance of the recovery mode is that, given its total independence from the main partition, it is a fail-safe drive that would allow us to reinstall the operating system at any time, transfer data from a copy of TimeMachine or even use Safari to get help. On Macs with Apple silicon the recovery partition allows us to do the following:

  • Repair the internal disk.
  • Install or reinstall macOS.
  • Restore data from a copy of the TimeMachine.
  • Configure various security options.
  • Use Safari.
  • Change the boot disk and restart the computer.
  • Share the Mac disk to be able to transfer data to another computer.
  • Change system settings in the Terminal.
  • Starting the computer in safe mode.
