And you can use this trick to even listen to YouTube with your iPhone screen turned off.

How to play YouTube videos in the background on the iPhone?

Playing YouTube in the background on the iPhone is possible thanks to the PiP feature introduced in iOS 14, so you should have your iPhone updated to this version. YouTube allows premium users to use PiP.

However, there’s a little trick to play YouTube in the background on the iPhone and to be able to do that we only need an app. First of all, you must download the app, register, and configure it to appear in the share menu of your iPhone. Do not worry these are very simple steps and the app explains itself. After you have the app installed and configured, these are the steps you must follow:

  1. Enter the YouTube app from your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Find the video or playlist you want to play.
  3. Click the Share button.
  4. Slide to the right and tap More.
  5. Now tap Pocket, the app you just downloaded.

You’ve already saved that link in the app, so now you must leave YouTube and enter the Pocket app. Inside the app you’ll see the video saved in your list, click on it to play it. When it’s playing, all you have to do is exit the app, sliding up from the bottom or pressing the Home button, if your iPhone has one.

Now you will see the video on a floating screen and you can continue using your iPhone while it plays in the background. You can make this floating window bigger or smaller.

But let’s go further, if you want to listen to a video, music, podcast or anything available on YouTube with your iPhone screen turned off, it’s possible by following the steps below.

The steps are identical to those in the first section. Once you have the YouTube video playing on the home screen of your iPhone or iPad, simply lock the device.

Now you must enter the Control Center, sliding from the top right corner down or from the bottom up on the iPhone with Touch ID. Click on the “play” icon in the upper right and you’ll start listening to YouTube with the iPhone’s screen turned off.

When YouTube implements this feature natively in its iOS application, it will not be necessary to use the Pocket app but for now, this method is really useful. This way you’ve learned how to play YouTube videos in the background on the iPhone.
